HCMUT President participates in important Education Cooperation Forums in Europe

Within the framework of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue’s official visit to European countries on June 27, President of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) – Vietnam National University-HCM (VNU-HCMC) signed several important cooperation agreements with partner universities in Europe. 

  • In the afternoon of June 27, the Vietnamese delegation came to Budapest to join in the Vietnam – Hungary Education Cooperation Forum.

In his speech, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh emphasized on the similarities in culture and history between Vietnam and Hungary. Over 72 years of collaboration and development, both countries have reached important achievements in various fields, including education. 

He then mentioned the cooperation agreement between the Governments of Vietnam and Hungary in 2013 as well as the visit of General Secretary of Vietnam Communist Party Nguyen Phu Trong in 2018, upgrading the regular partnership into a comprehensive one.

“Each year, Hungary offers 200 scholarships to Vietnamese students. Until now, it has trained 4,000 Vietnamese students in various fields like technology, economy management. Many have then become important leaders in the political system of Vietnam or major scientists in research centers, universities as well as successful businesspeople”, appreciated the Deputy Prime Minister. 

This visit, resulting in many important agreements, is going to accelerate the achievement of missions and commitments expected from the educational cooperation between the two nations. 

Balazs Hanko, Secretary of State of the Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Innovation, affirmed that this cooperation will be continuously enhanced and developed in the future. 

Prof. Dr. László Borhy, President of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference, stated that his organization as well as other Hungarian representative agencies at home and abroad always pay much attention to partnerships with international universities. The 3rd Education Cooperation Forum between Vietnam and Hungary is a chance for both countries to exchange experience, thereby promoting the long-term bilateral partnership in education.

In the forum, representatives from Vietnamese and Hungarian universities delivered many important presentations in the topics of ‘Digital Transformation in Higher Education’ (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mai Thanh Phong – President of HCMUT), ‘Cooperation in Medicine and Pharmacy between Vietnam and Hungary’ (Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Tu – President of Hanoi University of Medicine and Pharmacy), ‘Innovation and Digitization’ (Dr. Attila Fábián, Rector of Sopron University), ‘Promoting International Cooperation in Hungarian Universities’ (Dr. Zoltán Dubéczi – General Secretary of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference).

Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son commented that there are great chances of collaboration in the future between the two nations in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, basic science, agricultural science, digital transformation, along with many exchanges of students and lecturers. This relationship will, therefore, be considerably enhanced. 

The delegation paid a visit to Cambridge University on June 29, 2022. 

In this forum, representatives of Vietnamese universities and Hungarian partners signed nine memoranda of understanding, one of which is between HCMUT and Eötvös Loránd University. All focus on the joint work in training and scientific research.

  • On June 30, the Vietnamese delegation paid a visit to the UK and North Ireland to join in the Vietnam – UK Education Cooperation Forum, held in Imperial College London.

In his speech, Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue stressed that education is one critical national policy and one of the three breakthrough factors for the socio-economic development strategy in Vietnam. Its two targets of becoming an upper-middle-income country in 2030 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Communist Party and becoming a high-income developed country in 2045 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the country establishment can only be achieved via education.

The Forum is held in Imperial College London – one of the global top-10 universities – and is attracting the participation of senior leaders of both Vietnamese and UK universities as well as businesses in the destination country

He believed that this forum could initiate a new stage in the long-term sustainable, effective collaboration in education, greatly contributing to strengthen the partnership between the two nations. 

Chairman Hue then proposed that in the upcoming time, the UK Government could maintain its support in English language teaching in Vietnam via learning material sharing; continue to offer scholarships to Vietnamese students; increase the number of affiliating training programs between Vietnamese universities and high-ranking ones in the UK; prioritize the training in science-technology and doctoral training; improve exchanges of students and lecturers between the two nations; and boost the collaborative research between Vietnamese – UK universities.

He also mentioned that Vietnam is welcoming the establishment of branches of prestigious UK universities here via favorable conditions, followed by the suggestion that universities having just signed memoranda of understanding in this event develop a detailed, practical implementation plan for the Vietnamese Government’s project ‘Improving the Capacity of Lecturers, Managers in Higher Educational Institutes to Meet Requirements of Fundamental and Comprehensive Reform of Education and Training in Vietnam from 2019-2030’.

Finally, the Chairman called for a close cooperation between the Education and Training Ministries of the two nations as well as the UK Universities Association, the Vietnam Embassy in the UK for the best results.
