[SEMINAR] INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT FOR ORNAMENTAL FISH

Discus are a premium ornamental species, prized for their distinctive form and rare coloration, which confer significant aesthetic and collectible value. Moving discus internationally requires specialized protocols for packaging, temperature control, dissolved oxygen, and quarantine in order to preserve survival upon arrival. This seminar equips students with the critical steps and key performance indicators needed to design an optimal transport plan for this category of live animals. In the context of expanding global trade and rising demand for high-value discus, logistics for live aquatic products is both exacting and highly applicable. Offered within the course Global Logistics and Transportation Management, the seminar provides a systematic view of the end-to-end discus supply chain, from hatchery to international customer. Core topics include maintaining life-support conditions throughout the journey, planning and coordinating multimodal routes, complying with veterinary and trade regulations, shortening transit time, and reducing mortality.

The speaker represents Southern Tropical Fish Co., Ltd., a firm specializing in the breeding, rearing, and export of premium discus. Drawing on hands-on experience with sensitive live consignments, the talk will outline species-appropriate packing standards for discus, control of temperature and oxygen, stocking density and contingency handling, as well as essential documentation such as health certificates, customs declarations, and airline requirements. The seminar will also address contemporary management practices, including end-to-end process standardization, the use of journey-tracking data for risk forecasting, and contingency planning for flight delays or schedule changes, all aimed at safeguarding arrival quality and survival rates.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of how farms, freight forwarders, airlines, warehouses, and international buyers coordinate effectively, and they will learn to interpret critical metrics such as survival rate, total transit time, unit cost, and service quality. These insights form a practical foundation for designing transport solutions for technically demanding live-animal products such as discus, aligned with market standards and business performance goals.
